p.s. round up #3: thinking about thinking
another ai model, social media health, ig dumps, covid singles
I’m in the midst of becoming a morning workout guy. It’s not fun having a 6 am alarm jolt you out of your dreams, but health is wealth. Headphones on, moving heavy things — I feel like I’m on autopilot. Don’t ask me how many sets I have left because I’ve already lost track and I’m currently non-verbal. But once the sweat breaks, the fog clears. I have my first sip of coffee after an hour in morning purgatory, and I’m ready to attack the day (move numbers around a spreadsheet). Complex tasks require slow thinking; break it down into smaller problems and solve what you can. I couldn’t stand the gym after work, so I contemplated the morning and stumbled upon a whole new routine. It’s called chain of thought. How fun.

OpenAI’s new o1 model: While the previous GPT-4 model was acting on instinct, the new o1 model thinks before it speaks. It uses sequential reasoning to work on more complex tasks, breaking them down into smaller, more manageable steps. It’s reported to perform similarly to PhD students on challenging benchmark tasks in physics, chemistry, and biology. Yikes?
Nearly 40 states back surgeon general’s social media warning labels: The smoking metaphor for social media strengthens as “dozens of attorneys general say the labels could help address the ‘mental health crisis’ affecting young people.” Too many Instagram photo dumps?
The Desperation of the Instagram Photo Dump: Overanalyzing social media trends is always fun. The transformation of Instagram into a mall has made general exhaustion relatable. “Nonchalance achieved chalantly is nothing new, but the way it is being encouraged on social media today reflects increasing structural limitations to life online.”
Pandemic-Fueled ‘Dating Recession’ Is Reshaping American Economy: You’re single cause of the pandemic. “They’re out of practice. They’ve forgotten how to engage with people face-to-face.” Ok, drag me.
